RockAngel’s Radar brings you…The Temper Trap’s latest “Conditions”

3 11 2009

Heard of a little band called Phoenix lately? Even if it doesn’t ring a bell, you’ve definitely heard the song 1901 in a car commercial, a TV show, or just turning on the radio. Well that band is great…and now commercially popular obviously. But that’s old news, and now I’m on to the next big thing that Glassnote Records is bringing to the masses, and that’s The Temper Trap.

Hailing from Australia, The Temper Trap has already caught the ears of BBC’s Radio 1 and countless SXSW critics and bloggers, and now it’s time that The Rock and Roll Report gets a taste of their newest album Conditions. These emotion driven melodies can transport you to an inner reflection and still manage to keep your toes tapping. You may not know it yet, but these guys are the soundtrack to your future.

There’s not a detail missed in these meticulously crafted tracks from the heart pounding “Sweet Disposition” (recently featured in Indie film “500 Days of Summer”) to the anthem-like “Fader” and the electronic-experimentation “Science of Fear”. “Drum Song” really showcases how the percussion of this band keeps you on your toes, and acts as the epitome of their instrumental capabilities (I’m not even usually an instrumental fan).

Every time I listen to this album, I hear something new, and fall in love over and over again. Not since the Killers “Hot Fuss” album have I heard something so refreshing yet so instantly classic. If you can catch these guys at a small venue, do it now, because if they stay on this creative track, they’re gonna be up in the ranks with bands like Radiohead. This band deserves everything that comes their way and I truly believe this is one of the best albums of the year by far.

White Rabbits kill it at the live show at Casbah in San Diego

18 06 2009

Originally seduced by the lead track Percussion Gun from their new album It’s Frightening, I explored the rest of White Rabbits newest release and realized this band is really on to something. With a smooth Spoon sort of feel (hmmm, may have something to do with the creative hand of Brit Daniel on this album) and a rugged Cold War Kids intensity, White Rabbits manage to create something that is nothing short of music heaven. They put more creativity into one song than most put into a whole album.

So after knowing all of this, I head to a live show at the Casbah in San Diego that I am hopeful will be something to write about, and I got more than I ever could have asked for. I got there in time for the openers, and unfortunately for me, the first band of the night had a singer that was trying to be Luke Pritchard from The Kooks, only he wasn’t British, and I wasn’t buying it. So I had another drink, and prayed to the musical gods…

Next up was a band I had never heard of-The Subjects. I was a bit skeptical of this 4 piece flannel-clad band who claim to reign from Brooklyn, but look more like they come from a laid back hippie town. Don’t let their look fool you though. Initially I was getting a jam band kind of vibe, but then they pulled in all the creative tricks of Indie’s best and even threw in…reggae? Is that what I heard? Yes. My musical companion for the night heard it also. As he put it, “it sounds like these guys sit around a room, possibly filled with some kind of mind altering substance, saying, ‘yeah, that sounds cool, let’s try it”. Their influence was diverse and their execution was flawless. A lot of “ooohs” and “ahhhs”, some great harmonies, a touch of a synth, and a solid rock band sound fused with Chamber Pop creativity all came together and made me remember why I liked to catch the openers. To top it off, I talked to the singer for a minute afterwards and he couldn’t be nicer. I wish the best for these guys, because they definitely deserve it. Check out their myspace…but realize that the quality of these songs just doesn’t do them justice. Preorder their album from the page, or wait until it’s picked up by iTunes or Lala, so you can really get a sense of what these guys are capable of.

White Rabbits live at the Casbah

White Rabbits live at the Casbah

Now for the main event…White Rabbits hit the stage, and they don’t waste any time warming up the crowd. The drumbeat is prevalent …wait, the drum beats are KILLING it! Yes, they had two drummers…and so the percussion orgasm begins. The band plays with an energy that is unsurpassed by anyone I’ve seen and the singer eases in with a smooth intensity that pierces even the toughest exterior to reach deep down into your musical soul. And apparently, no one told the backup vocals that they had to be inferior to the main ones because they brought depth to the many instrumental layers that were already there and they went down as smooth as a good scotch (or good red wine for those of us that don’t drink scotch).

One of the key elements to this band is the pairing of the intense drumbeats with the simplistic beauty of a piano (keys). These guys are no strangers to a good progressive buildup and they use these elements, in addition to the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, textured vocals, and even tambourine (who knew it would be so important?) to drive you to a musical climax that is sure to propel them to the stardom they deserve.

His voice is so richly textured and intense...amazing!

By the time they got to their single “Percussion Gun”, I didn’t think it could get any better, but of course, I was wrong. The live performance of this song should go down in history. Even if you weren’t a fan before, you couldn’t walk away from that song without being completely blown away. Check out the video posted on their myspace page to get an idea. Words cannot describe their performance of this song; it was nothing sort of a radioactive spiritual experience that left the crowd glowing in the aftermath.

White Rabbits - Percussion Gun -Casbah San DIego

They always say in the law of attraction to “act the part”, even if you’re not there yet, and these guys go out every night and play like they have made it big…no matter how small the venue. Check ‘em out now, while you still can see them at a small venue, because these guys are headed straight to the top.

Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D – review, streaming and cheap album deal

12 06 2009

singlethongsinglethongsinglethongsinglethong

If you know me, you know I’m not really one for pop or hip hop music, but for whatever reason, I thought I’d give the new Black Eyed Peas release The E.N.D. a try…and it definitely wasn’t for my love of Boom Boom Pow, because honestly, I was not super-impressed with it.  It’s a fun party song, but it didn’t really stand out from the rest.

However, once I listened, I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve like Black Eyed Peas since back in the days pre-Fergie, and their sound has definitely evolved and become more pop, but you can’t deny that they did what they had to do to get noticed.  Although you could say they’ve completely sold out, for a fun pop/hip hop/dance album, The E.N.D. is everything it needs to be.  They’ve definitely incorporated a lot more electronic/techno sounds compared to the hip hop infused Elephunk, but it’s actually pretty interesting to see their evolution and versatility. They do a great job of switching up the style so it never gets redundant, and I’m sure you can attribute that to the creative producing done by will.i.am.

Songs like “Imma Be” and “Boom Boom Pow” are not really my thing, but the sampling in “Rock That Body” and “Party all the Time” (among others) is pretty spectacular.  I really like the originality in “Now Generation” and “Out of My Head” (I love the old school funk feel of this one).  Honestly, I could do without the white-girl-Fergie-raps most of the time, but when Fergie belts it out on songs like “Missing You” and “Meet Me Halfway” it makes you realize what she really brings to the table. For the old school fans, check out “One Tribe”…it’s a nice blend of the old and new style and is a little more meaningful than the club hits.

Yes, I gave it 4 thongs.  So call me a sellout and make fun of me all you want, but I think this album is a great summer CD to throw in the car when you’re gettin’ ready to head out for the night.  The windows are down, your hair is did, and you’re gettin’ pumped and enjoying the lighter side of life.  It’s also great to get you through the last few hours of work on a Friday :)

And really,  you can’t beat $3.99 for an MP3 album through Lala.com.   You can stream it for free and buy it for only $3.99 from Lala for a limited time.

New Music Tuesday – 06.02.09 – Dave Matthews, The Sounds, 311, Taking Back Sunday…all these album releases in one day, am I in heaven?ban

2 06 2009

If you know me, you should know that my favorite weekday is New Music Tuesday.  However, some are definitely better than others, and this week, the list of albums dropping makes me salivate (it was either the music or the delicious mango I just ate, maybe a mixture of both).

Dave Matthews New AlbumFirst off, we have the one and only Dave Matthews with Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.  Whether you like him, or hate him, you can’t deny that he has become a permanent fixture in musical history, and hopefully one that’s due for a comeback.  I’m not going to lie, if he played music from his few albums, I would know a total of 1 song (I thought the collabo with Jurassic 5 was pretty cool).  I will always agree he is one of the best live acts out there because the energy at his show is only understood through the music (which is why his live albums have always been so much more popular), but I haven’t gone to his show in a few years because the new stuff just hasn’t had the same impact on me as his older stuff.

So what does the new album have to offer?  Is this the album that wins back his older fans?  I don’t think you can judge an album after just one listen, but I can say, it’s definitely worth listening to a few more times, and maybe many more.  I’ve definitely gotten chills a few times and I think he goes back to a more organic sound, but there is still a sense of wanting to move forward and not just produce what’s already been done.  One thing I can say, is he is still an amazing writer and creates some of the most unique melodies.  Take a listen for yourself with a free streaming preview of Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King from Lala below and let me know what you think.

The Sounds Crossing The RubiconNext on my listening list…The Sounds.  You may not have heard of them before they opened for No Doubt this year on tour, but this band has been a fierce Swedish force since 1999.  They’re definitely a 180 from DMB with the electro-pop synth and new wave sound and their latest album Crossing The Rubicon doesn’t stray much from what we’ve come to know of them.  For some reason I never expect much from The Sounds, even though I have loved their music consistently since I first heard them.  Maybe the lack of expectation gives me a better appreciation for each album, but either way, I’m really digging Crossing The Rubicon so far.  It’s nothing that’s going to change your world, but it might just add a little extra flavor to your days.  The energy is totally upbeat and fun and their first single “Nobody Sleeps When I’m Awake” really doesn’t do the album justice.  The final verdict?  Can’t be sure, but I know it makes me smile, I’ll let you hear for yourself…listen to Crossing The Rubicon for free from Lala below:

The Sounds – Crossing The Rubicon – Free album streaming

311 Uplifter“My longtime friend”…311, oh how I’ve missed you. But if you’re like me, you probably think they’ve gotten a little soft in their progression since Music in ‘01.  For the most part, I found Uplifter to be pretty mellow and their first single “Hey You” is a pretty good indicator of what the rest of the album is about.  There are a few songs that remind me of the good ol’ 311, like “Jackpot” and “India Ink”, but I don’t think I’ll be listening to the rest of the album again.  It does live up to its name, as I found the album to be very uplifting, but I was also pretty bored.  Listen to the album and judge for yourself though:

311 – Uplifter – Free album streaming

Taking Back Sunday New AgainAfter a very relaxing afternoon with 311, I’m pretty happy that Taking Back Sunday was here to rock me into the evening with their release of New Again.  My first take on the album is that it pretty solidly rocks, in standard Taking Back Sunday fashion.  It’s definitely one that needs a few more good listens to really judge, but so far, my favorites are “Carpathia” and the title track “New Again”.  Ready to do some rocking out?  Check it out:

Taking Back Sunday – New Again – Free album streaming

Also, don’t forget to check out Rancid’s new one Let the Dominoes Fall or Blood:Franz Ferdinand.  I didn’t have time to check them out today, but they are definitely in my queue.  Also, Patrick Wolf is flying under the radar with The Bachelor but it could turn out to be a real hidden gem if it’s anything like his older stuff (very indie, very unique).

And that concludes one of the best NMT’s in RockAngel history…some surprises, some let-downs, but overall, I have a few new albums, and a full queue of songs left, and have completely overindulged in music today so I am one happy little RockAngel.

Until next time…keep rockin’…

RockAngel’s Weekly Radar recommends The Working Title

15 05 2009

The Weekly Radar is here to bring you the artists, albums and songs that might not be on your musical radar, but should be. This week, I’d like to introduce you to Joel Hamilton—the mastermind behind The Working Title.

The new album Bone Island just came out on the 12th and is nothing short of a musical masterpiece. However, The Working Title has been releasing consistently well-crafted albums since 2003 and has since matured like a fine wine. Since their initial EP in 2003, the band has dwindled down to the bare bones of only Joel Hamilton and the producing genius known as Jake Sinclair with mixing done by Claudius Mittendorfer (Mars Volta, Muse, Maroon 5, Brand New). As the layers of the band peeled away, Joel really found his voice and the new album finds its way into contention for my vote of one of the best albums of the year so far.

Joel

Joel

The Working Title’s
previous albums are good; they vary between songs that sound like the Fray to Radiohead and even Bright Eyes. Every album is a great listen, but Bone Island has pushed them into a whole new arena. They still have a similar sound, but breakthrough to the realm of Musical Genius on songs like “Wolf” (my fav) and will become Indie Gods with songs like “Arms and Thighs” and “Dead Inside”. Bone Island manages to be original enough to please the Indie rockers, but catchy enough to not annoy the rest of us..which is an unusually hard balance to achieve. Even the slow songs have a movement and progression that you want to listen to over and over, because it just goes down smoother with every shot.

This isn’t an album you have to blast loud to enjoy (though I would recommend it), and it’s not an album you have to be on illegal drugs to see the beauty in…it’s more like a sampler platter, filled with lots of raw emotion, poetic lyrics, and some damn good producing. Joel tries a little of this, a little of that, and ends up with something completely original, and absolutely delicious.

Until next time…keep rockin’…

RockAngel gets a facelift…and syndicates to Rockandrollreport.com

15 05 2009

No…not really a facelift, but I did add a new header!  That way, no matter where you are, you can see me and my crazy Halloween costume.  If I could wear a costume every weekend, I totally would, but unfortunately, that kind of thing is usually frowned upon.

So anyways, onto the big news for me!  After this week I’m going to start writing for rockandrollreport.com.  I’ll still be writing on this one, because they specialize in mostly unsigned and indie bands, and I pretty much love it all…big names and all.  But I’m thinking it will force me to keep up with this a lot more than I have lately and at least give you guys one more band a week to check out.  You should definitely head over to the website and check out what they have going on. There’s a lot of great lesser-known artists they feature, you could spend hours there!

This is also going to allow me to help spread the word about a lot of the music I feel so passionately about, so I am really excited! Hopefully we can help build more of a fanbase for those bands that remain under the radar.

I’ve been checking out a lot of new artists lately too, so be sure to check out RockAngel’s Rotation..put a handful of new songs up and you can listen to the full version of them.   I’m still working on trying to figure out how to get a good widget in here that I can add live music dates and album releases; hopefully I’ll figure out something soon.

So much great music is coming to SD this summer and I’ll make sure to give reviews for all of them.  Iglu and Hartley are playing at 710 tonight and Stroke 9 is playing there next Saturday.  I’m also hoping to catch The Riverboat Gamblers on the 28th at the Casbah and have plans to see Unwritten Law, Incubus, Kings of Leon and Bedouin Soundclash…I’m getting giddy just thinking about it.

I should have a fresh set of recommendations by next week.  Lots of musical treats coming your way!  …and you don’t even have to beg for them :)

…keep rockin’…

The 51st Annual Grammys…RockAngel’s Rundown

12 02 2009

I’m not one for awards shows, but there is one I watch year after year… the Grammys….and not so much to see who wins, and definitely not to see what they wear (I’m not really that type of girl), but mostly because they have some great, and sometimes unexpected performances.  They pretty much have access to any and every musician that is alive (and sometimes they manage to resurrect their music when they’re not) which makes for a pretty stellar lineup.  Not to mention, they don’t skimp on the production.

(Videos for most of the performances are here)

8pm…Grammy’s start…U2 comes out and rocks their new song “Get On Your Boots”, which I love, but think that somehow has been overplayed already (too much Sirius Alt Nation for me?).  Nonetheless…it is U2, and they come out rocking.  They are always one for a great performance, but honestly, I didn’t think they really sounded that great…and thank you, but I don’t need all the words to your song on the screen.  I felt like I was going to be quizzed.

So here comes Whitney Houston…man, she was lookin’ great!  Unfortunately, she’s either killed too many brain cells to sound coherent, or she had a few too much of something intoxicating that night, because something was just not right with that woman.  However, seeing Jennifer Hudson take away the award for best female R&B vocalist, was very touching.  She was so grateful, and those are the kind of people you just feel that really deserve it.

Then here comes JT…mmmm, so delicious…but peforming with Al Green?  Of course he killed it, and they sounded great…but I’m not gonna lie, he did seem a little out of his element, and kinda old and cheesy.

When Jennifer Hudson came back out to perform, she nailed it.  Her voice was impeccable and the sense of pride and accomplishment radiated in every note.

Everyone on the alt stations is giving Coldplay a hard time for having Jay-Z come out and drop a verse in the middle of Chris Martin’s solo, but honestly, Jay-Z is the man, and in my eyes, he can do no wrong.  I thought the pairing was hot.  And then of course, the rest of Coldplay came out and they sounded amazing as always…much better than U2 actually.  But what’s up with the British Army home-ec coats?  I can’t decide if that was cool, or just cheesy, but they definitely made a statement (just not sure what it was yet).

Unfortunately, the Grammys span all genres, even ones you might not like…such as country.  But being from VA, I still have a little bit of Kuuuntree left in me…and even if you don’t, Carrie Underwood is hot, so you could mute it and still be entertained.  Did I mention I have a new girl crush?  Not only did she nail it, she rocked it while she did it and had one seriously bad-ass chick rockin’ the guitar along side of her.  I think this performance of “Last Name” could even make a fan out of those damn yankees.  ;)

Time for song of the year….who were my favorites?  Hmmm…well, “Sex on Fire” was definitely up there, but wait, they weren’t even nominated?  Oh, of course Coldplay got it…not that I didn’t love the other songs, but I’m finding it hard to believe that “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles and “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz even stood a chance.  Is anyone aware that “Love song” was written for the record industry (and about them)?  Oh wait, that’s who’s voting…now it all makes sense.  I would vote for what I was trying to sell too.

Next is Kid Rock.  I respect his talent (he plays all of his instruments), but I still just wish he’d go away.  “Summertime” is catchy and all, but my life would probably not be affected if the song didn’t exist.

So here come teen queens Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift.  I respect Taylor Swift…but I have to say her music sounds like the poetry I wrote about boys when I was in a young teenager…oh wait, that’s who buys her music, got it.  Taylor still sounded amazing and Miley didn’t sound so bad either, for Miley, but what was up with the random duded hanging out below their stage playing insruments?  They looked like they were their little pawns or something.

Woohoo!  Stevie Wonder was up next…that guy has so many classic songs, I thought for sure this was gonna be one of my favorite performances of the night.  Unfortunately, the epitome of all that is wrong with teeny bopper music came out…the Jonas Brothers.  Sometimes I think they were put on this earth to make me miserable.  I’m not gonna lie, they didn’t sound that bad…but they are just so f’n awkward!! I won’t call them by name (mostly because I don’t know them, and would be ashamed if I did), but what was up with that one guys hair?  Is he stuck in the 80s?  Was he even born in the 80s?  And this thing they call “dancing”, makes me feel very uncomfortable.  They are known for preaching celibacy, and it’s very evident if you watch the way they move up on stage.  You guys have no idea how to turn girls on…that are over the age of 13.  I wanted to cry….why Stevie?  Why?!!!

So then comes the news of the night…Blink 182 is reuniting!!! Woohooo!  The world will be whole again!!!  Or, um, I could care less.  I don’t dislike them, but I can’t say that I’m a huge Blink fan.  They are actually one of the only bands who I didn’t think was very good live. So…yeah, awesome.  New Blink music.  I’m sure it will be catchy.

Again Kings of Leon was passed up for an award….sad…

Now comes a performance I was really looking forward to….my much announced girl crush Katy Perry.  They had quite the production set up for her, and then she comes down in a big banana…why?  Who cares, it was awesome…along with all of the other sparkly fruit on her costume and the stage.  She is such a character and so different…I love it.  She looked like she was having the time of her life on stage..in her flat shoes (heels are overrated) and her superhot backup dancers.  This was one of my favorite acts of the night for sure.

So back to 80’s hair…did anyone see Kanye West?  Good thing he had Estelle with him, who was radiant and sounded amazing.  Although, they could have picked up Satellite signals from Mars in their silver getup.  The song sounded great though, and that’s what it’s all about…amazing music.

Adele took home best new artist and seemed happy, so that was good….blah blah blah…here comes the all star hip-hop hop lineup of the year…M.I.A., Jay Z, TI, Li’l Wayne, and Kanye West.  I knew this was something to remember when M.I.A. hit the stage with her polka dot getup  covering her big ol’ prego belly…and she killed it!  I’m not a Lil Wayne fan, but I’m not gonna lie, he sounded just as good as the other artists on stage that I love, so he gets my respect (for that night at least).  This wasn’t the annoying rap act when there’s too many guys on stage singing over each other. This was a lineup of some of the best talent in the genre, doin’ what they do best…droppin’ verses.  They mean what they say when they say that nobody else has a  “Swagga like us”.

Kate Beckinsale is hot…I don’t know why she’s presenting.  But she’s hot.

If I was an old white guy, I’d want to be Paul McCartney.  That guy still seem so young, it’s hard to believe that was who my parents rocked out to.  He came out on stage with Dave Grohl rockin’ the drums and brought “I saw her standing there” back to life.  For random pairings of the night…this one takes the cake.

John Mayer makes me want poke my eye out with a spoon. But he’s a good artist.  I just wish he’s stick with the guitar so I don’t have to hear his sappy music.

So…more country…here comes Sugarland.  This chick sounds amazing.  I like country, it’s in my blood, so I’m going with it.  Transition to:  Adele. She really does have an incredible voice and writes some great songs.  I think her stage presence could use a little work though.  She kinda just stands there emotionless.  This was very evident when Jennifer Nettles (singer from Sugarland) came out on stage and also nailed Adele’s song, but did it with a lot more passion.

I’m sure if you’re still reading this, your favorite performance of the night was the next one.  I know I didn’t give In Rainbows much credit (still can’t listen to the whole album), but I will never doubt the genius that is Radiohead or Thom Yorke.  The full marching band really brought “15 Step” to a whole new level.  This performance was brilliant, there’s not much more you can really say about that…another one of my top acts of the night.

Bringin’ it back to the hip-hop side…here comes JT and TI….awesome.  I heart JT and all of his musical deliciousness (and physical deliciousness).  I didn’t really know “Dead and Gone” before they performed it, but…Wow.  JT was workin’ that piano and T.I. dropped some very emotional lyrics that remind me why I love him so much (and why his album is way better than Lil Wayne’s).

Ne-Yo and Jamie fox take the stage to perform a tribute to the Four Tops, and if most of them were still alive, I think they’d be proud.  I couldn’t pick Ne-Yo out of a crowd, or tell you what he sings, but they did their job well.  And speaking of bringin’ it back to the old school.  Neil Diamond took the stage next, and we all know he’s a classic.  The stage was lined with all kinds of great guitar players and they had a nice little jam sesh, right on stage.  Awesome?  Yes, very.

So I hate to say it, but I did gain a lot of respect for Li’l Wayne at the Grammys.  He came out with Robin Thicke (which was a great pairing by the way) with a tribute to New Orleans and I was actually really feelin’ it.  Maybe I will go actually listen to his album…maybe…

Of course the pairing of the night in the eyes of the industry was Robert Plant and Allison Krauss.  They cleaned up on the awards, and their duet sounded good.  Is the rest of the album really that amazing?  Guess I’ll have to check it out, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

It was nice to see Stevie wrap up the evening solo, but it was a little uneventful.  I was hoping for an explosion of pop culture icons blowing up the stage…or maybe not, after all, this is the Grammys, not the Superbowl of 2006 (we all know what happened there).

Overall, I was very content with the level of entertainment I got, but I still think the industry needs a little shaking up…although Kings of Leon did win for “Sex on Fire” as the best rock song by a duo or group, I would have liked to see them clean up…oh, and maybe perform??  And where was Santogold?  No awards?  No performances?  I guess there are a lot of bands I would have liked to see perform (TV on the Radio), but I guess the Grammy’s take some time to catch on to what the rest of us already know is good music.

Sorry I couldn’t steal any pictures from the show…they are all protected :(   But you can go here, AOL has some good ones

Endoxi – New Blood Old Soul

10 02 2009

singlethongsinglethongsinglethongsinglethong

Campfire music that really rocks…Endoxi’s first EP New Blood, Old Soul is exactly what it says it is.  They bring life to music with a timeless energy that sounds like everything and nothing you’ve ever heard before.  They capture the sense of nostalgia, much like O.A.R. does, but with more of a west coast style.  It’s evident that they don’t just throw words together to fit their music, but instead, craft them in such a way as to bring out the emotion that’s already so present in every note.  If you took the music out of the equation, these are lyrics that could stand alone and still tell a story of love, hurt and a lot of self-discovery.

I always say that it’s not where you are, but who you’re with that really matters (ok, so Dave Matthews said it too), and if you were with those people that really matter, just laughing, having a few beers, and throwin’ some burgers on the BBQ, this is the music you’d want to listen to.  On another note, if you see them live, you really get a sense of the ability they have to bring up the intensity of the music and really rock out (and if you’re someone who get’s into drummers…this one is pretty f’n amazing).

You’ve gotta give the sax a lot of credit for distinguishing their sound, but that’s just the icing on the cake.  These are 4 very talented musicians that all bring something to the table, and the band just wouldn’t be the same without any of them.  This is one of those CDs that keeps finding itself back into the rotation, even though I listened to it a ridiculous amount of times after seeing them peform an accoustic act at 710 Beach Club.  So why only 4 thongs? Although the music leaves a delcious aftertaste, the EP is only 5 songs…and it only makes you hungry for more.

O.A.R. at House of Blues…a little taste of East Coast style in San Diego

If you know me, you know I get pretty excited to see any kind of live music.  But last night I was more excited than Ryan Seacrest at a Pride parade..that’s because I finally got to see one of the defining bands of my college years- O.A.R. People who live on the East Coast just won’t understand, because they roll through those towns a few times a year, but it is rare that O.A.R. makes in into southern California, and more specifically, San Diego, EVER.  Believe me, I watch the live music lineups that come through, and it’s been quite awhile.  Needless to say, seeing their name on the House of Blues lineup made me so excited I couldn’t contain myself.  I’ve been listening to their Live from Madison Square Garden album in a pretty consistent rotation in the last few months…and I don’t listen to live albums really, but this is an exception.  You can’t help but to smile and feel a sense of nostalgia listening to the live energy…or maybe it’s just my east coast roots, either way, it beats the hell out of any of their studio albums.

So on to the show…

He was jammin!

Getting downtown on a Wednesday by 7 was not the easiest task, but I knew Eric Hutchinson was opening, and we all know how much I adore his music.  Somehow, by the grace of the music gods, we got there just in time, and as he sang his first words, I felt immediately justified in my urgency to be there on time.  He sang with as much soul live as I’ve heard on his album and the band was sharp.  You could tell he just loved what he was doing since he was so into it, and that feeling translated into the audience.  Most people weren’t familiar with his music, but once he started going, he had the whole crowd clapping and singing along.  When he broke into “You Don’t have to Belive Me”, I was the happiest girl in the world.  Everyone started dancing, a few of us were singing along, and everyone was having a great time.  I could have left after and been satisfied, but much to my delight…

Eric told the crowd he’d be back by the merch table if anyone wanted to come meet him.  Of course we went back there, and were about 15 people back from the front.  Luckily for us, he decided to make us the front of the line, so we ended up being the first to meet him. He was very polite, super laid back, and extremely grateful for every compliment we paid him…which of course included me telling him he’s really got something special and he’s gonna blow up…and that I’ve been rocking his CD for months and it was one of my favorite of the year.  Maybe I sounded like a 13-year old girl at a New Kids concert, but I thought he should know that there are some fans out there who came to see him as well as OAR.  I think I maintained myself ok though, and then we got our pictures, got a ticket signed, and let him meet the rest of the girls who also adore musicians (even ones they don’t know).

Now for the main event…

O.A.R. takes the stage, and the crowd gets superamped.  Can’t quite remember the first song, but I know that “This Town” was one of the first ones, and you could just feel the positive energy in the air.  It’s one of those songs that just makes you feel at home.  For a crowd full of East-Coasters (like myself), it was some of the most laid back people I’ve seen.  I’ve always said that being at a live show is one of the only times when I feel like I’m truly living in the moment.  Every note, every beat, and every word that came out of Marc’s mouth floated through the evening and filled the room with a sense of nostalgia, and in a way, a sense of life…how it’s supposed to be lived.

As the night went on, O.A.R. mixed it up with some of the oldies but goodies like “Hey Girl” to which the crowd sang along to every word, but also some of their new stuff like “Livin’ in the End”, which seemed to be surprisingly popular given that it’s a newer song (guess everyone else probably loved the live CD too).  O.A.R. will always be best remembered for their old jam-style music, but when you see them perform their new stuff, you can’t even hold “Shattered” against them.  Sure, it’s sell-out-radio-friendly music, but it still has a way of creeping in to that place where you stop hearing music, and start feeling it.  I don’t think there was a single song that you didn’t see at least 75% of the crowd singing along to. Unfortunately, during Shattered, their voice comes through a little more than the band’s, but here’s a vid if you’re interested:

O.A.R. continued to make their way through the night, slowing it down a bit, and then rockin’ again.  They of course do the “we’re done for the night” fakeout…which no one bought, because we were all very aware that they haven’t played possibly the most popular song from colllege campuses about 5 years ago…”Crazy Game of Poker”.  So of course they came back out, and performed about a 15 minute rendition of it and totally jammed like the O.A.R. we all know and love.  If this doesn’t remind you of every house party you went to in college…then you never went to one on the east coast, that’s for sure.

Here are the rest of the pics from the show…

…keep rockin’…
